If you're getting more into padel and starting to play in leagues or tournaments, you’ve probably heard players talk about rankings. But how do they actually work and how do you get one? Here’s a simple breakdown of both UK and international padel rankings, how they’re calculated and why they matter whether you're just starting out or looking to test yourself on the competitive circuit.

UK rankings: managed by the LTA

In the UK, padel rankings are overseen by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA). They reflect your results in LTA-approved matches and tournaments giving a clear picture of your level and how you stack up against others nationally. Your ranking is based on your best six results over the past 12 months. That means consistency is rewarded, but one off-day won’t drag your score down. You don’t need to be a pro to earn a ranking. Anyone playing in recognised competitions can start earning points. That includes:

- Local and regional tournaments
- Club competitions with LTA status
- Matches in the LTA National League

Once you're registered, you can view your points and position via the LTA Player Portal - it’s free to use and easy to access.

How rankings are calculated

- Points are awarded for match wins, with higher-level tournaments offering more
- Only your top six results count
- Rankings exist across categories - adults, juniors and age-specific groups like over-40s
- They're used to seed tournaments, track progress and create well-matched draws
- So whether you're entering your first competition or looking to climb the ladder, rankings offer useful structure

FIP rankings: the international system

If you play abroad or follow the professional circuit, you’ll see another ranking system in play: FIP. The International Padel Federation (FIP) runs the official world rankings, based on results from international tournaments including the FIP Tour and Premier Padel events.

FIP points are awarded for:
- Match wins at FIP-sanctioned events from entry-level (FIP Rise) to top-tier (Premier Padel)
- Progress through rounds - the further you go, the more points you earn
- Playing with a partner as rankings are individual, but results come from doubles play

Most UK players start on the national circuit, but FIP rankings are a great goal if you're looking to test yourself internationally. And with more Brits entering the global game, it’s an exciting next step to aim for.

Why rankings matter

Rankings are useful for more than just bragging rights. They help:

- Players set goals and measure improvement
- Organisers seed tournament draws fairly
- Coaches group training by ability
- Clubs build balanced league teams
- They also add motivation and structure to your playing journey especially if you enjoy testing yourself in matchplay
