Coach Nacho Porto’s Top Tips for Beginners

Last week at Daylesford, we had the pleasure of welcoming Coach Nacho Porto - a renownedSpanish coach known for his sharp eye, straight-talking style, and deep understanding of the game. He shared his *evolving approach* with both our players and coaches, and we asked him to distill his advice for anyone just starting their padel journey.

Positioning is everything

“If you don’t know where you’re meant to be, the rest won’t work.”

Nacho compares it to driving in the UK (not his favourite activity!) you’ve got to be in the correct lane. In padel, good positioning is the foundation of every point. Master that, and the rest becomes much easier.

Don't sweat the technique

“Play first. The polish comes later.”

Nacho loves to see beginners just play. Try shots, make mistakes, experiment. You don’t need to obsess about perfect form from day one - bravery and curiosity will take you further.

Practice the lob

“It’s the shot that changes everything.”

Mastering a reliable lob gives you time, space, and control. It’s often overlooked by beginners - but it can transform a rally and turn defence into attack. *Contrary to what other coaches say, Nacho invites you to use lobs in difficult situations too*.

Adopt the right mindset

“Take control, *get into the driver’s seat* — you decide where the point is going.

Be assertive, go for it and don’t wait for your opponents to take charge.

Have fun - it's how you learn best

“When you have more fun, you actually learn more.”

Padel is meant to be enjoyed. The more relaxed and engaged you are, the quicker things click. Don’t chase perfection — stay playful, stay curious and the progress will follow.
