Padel is a dynamic, sociable racket sport that’s rapidly growing across the UK and beyond. Played in doubles on a compact, enclosed court, it blends the best of tennis and squash into a fast-paced, strategic game that’s easy to pick up and hard to stop playing. Whether you’re completely new to racket sports or just looking for a fresh challenge, padel is accessible, exciting and designed to be shared.

The basics

Padel is played on a 20m x 10m court surrounded by glass and metal fencing. The space is about a third the size of a tennis court, and it’s always played in doubles - two players per team. The game begins with an underarm serve, and the scoring is the same as tennis: 15, 30, 40, game - six games to win a set, and best of three sets to win the match. What sets padel apart is the use of walls. After the ball bounces, it can rebound off the glass, keeping the rally going and opening up new angles and tactics. It’s a fast game, but less about raw power and more about positioning, teamwork and quick reactions.

What equipment do you need?

You play with a solid, stringless racket usually made of carbon fibre or a foam composite and a ball that looks like a tennis ball but has slightly lower pressure. Players wear court-specific shoes for grip and support and comfortable sportswear that allows for easy movement. At Padel Shift, we provide all equipment for coaching sessions and you can rent rackets and buy balls on site if you have a court booking.

What makes padel different?

Padel combines elements of other sports but creates a style all of its own. It stands out because:
- The serve is always underarm, making it beginner-friendly
- The walls are in play, like squash, keeping rallies going longer
- The enclosed court makes for a sociable, energetic environment
- It’s a doubles game, which makes it more collaborative and fun

You don’t need a big serve or flashy shots to succeed. Instead, you’ll rely on smart play, sharp movement and great communication.

Who's it for?

Padel is for everyone. Whether you're:
- A complete beginner looking for a sociable, easy-to-learn sport
- A former tennis or squash player wanting something new
- A junior or family looking for something active to do together
- A fitness lover who wants a full-body workout that doesn’t feel like one

It’s low-impact, enjoyable from the first session, and easy to build on. At Padel Shift, we welcome players at all levels from first-timers to seasoned players. You’ll find expert coaching, beautiful venues and a relaxed, welcoming community.
